Responding to the article from
SITUATION edited by Claire Doherty, I really understand one of the messages as
the relationship between the “space” and the art piece itself. There is a
direct relationship between the space in which the artwork is placed and the
art work itself. The “space” creates a whole message around the piece, and
therefore becomes part of the work itself. When interpreting what I had read I used a person (in this
case my brother) to represent an artwork. Just like a piece of art a person has
its own personality, its own unique physical qualities, and also admits an aura
of energy that the viewers respond to. Just like a piece of artwork this person
has its “place” or in this case its environment where it is most suited when
viewing. My brother (the artwork) makes more sense when viewed within the
context of his own home because it is more natural and speaks more to him as a
person. Where as the white blank “space” creates a whole new message around my
brother, forming a whole new environment and therefore how the viewer then
perceives him. In both cases a message is created around the relationship
between the art piece and the space, however the environment chosen to
represent the artwork can shift the meaning of the work to something very mute
to something very powerful.
It is very important to take the environment
in which you are placing your work into consideration, because it embodies just
as, if not a more powerful message then the artwork alone.

Well said Dana, and might I add your brother looks fabulous as a piece of art work.
